Microchip & Register Your Pet

Why microchip your pets?

According to statistics, one in three pets become lost at some point in their lives. Microchips are a surefire way of ensuring that lost dogs can be returned to their rightful owners. At the same time owners who have taken dogs from rescue shelters and let them go deliberately from their homes, and that also unfortunately happens, can be held accountable through this simple technique.

According to AKC (American Kennel Club) Reunite, “Pets with microchips are up to 20 times more likely to be reunited with their owners.” It’s a simple procedure, and the risks are minimal. So, take this opportunity to contribute to our fundraiser to help us make sure more lost dogs are found and more broken hearts repaired.

How do dog microchips work?

A microchip is a radio-frequency identification transponder that carries a unique identification number, and is roughly the size of a grain of rice. When the microchip is scanned by a vet or shelter, it transmits the ID number. There’s no battery, no power required, and no moving parts. The microchip is injected under the loose skin between a dog’s shoulder blades and can be done at any local veterinarians clinic. It’s no more invasive than a vaccination.

However, the unique identifier needs to be registered with a reliable pet recovery database for it to be effective..However there are not many reliable pet recovery databases in India presently which is why we at KAW are in the process of creating the first ever pet recovery database in the country to ensure that all dogs who have microchips can be recovered.

What is our goal with the microchipping program?

The goal of the microchipping program is to ensure the following:

Reuniting pet parents with their pets and bringing structure to the Indian pet recovery process. Most pet parents attempt to put up flyers or use word-of-mouth to recover their pets. The flyers put up tend to be of a temporary nature and the mode of contact is also phone based or mail based. A microchip will allow a good hearted person to retrieve a pet and leave the pet at a center from where the microchip on the pet can be used to contact the parent.

It will establish accountability. Some pet owners, especially first time owners, have been found to let their pets loose after taking them from animal shelters. This will allow traceability to ensure that such owners can be held accountable and such owners can be blacklisted and prevented from adopting any more pets.

How can you support our program?

There are multiple ways in which you can support our program. For starters, you can provide support to our program by registering your pet who is microchip enabled with our database. This allows the database to scale up and build credibility. In the event that your pet is not being tracked with a microchip your support can take the form of getting your pet pal “microchipped”. If you can be an ambassador for explaining the benefits of this microchip enablement program that would be a great way of expressing support too. Finally, getting your friends and colleagues who happen to be pet parents to enroll into the program would be a great way of expressing support too.
